Journal Archives (IV): “What the @$%# is that?” (2006/02)
Necktopus    3/16/06
First time Daveworld guests typically follow, “What the @#$% is that?” with, “How do you name stuff?” Like sculpting, my naming process blends blind inspiration with sheer accident. Today’s catch yielded Fruitnipple, Seafritter, Beachpear, Fripplet and Bruce. Open to interpretation, the ideal name prompts recognition coupled with uncertainty. “Nice Neckmonkey. Han Dynasty?” My favorite titles make a crisp “k” sound: Trick, Focus, Creature, Octopus and Syrinx. Occasionally the provenance is richer, as with Fripp, Lynx, Kang and Kimbra, all derived from the names of people who made unforgettable first impressions.
