Sculpture Dance - Summer 2007

This year a lot of unique commissions came along, including my first grant-funded project.

I have spent most of this summer working on the visual effects for sub-Rosa, a multi-media collaboration with Seattle choreographer Cheronne Wong. A modern dance piece, it explores an international undercover world, the unveiling of masked identities and covert communication using numeric code. Cheronne’s inspiration for sub-Rosa came from recordings of shortwave numbers stations rumored to be a document of covert communications of the world’s secret agencies. I created a large wire drawing to suspend above the stage, and will integrate a pod of floor sculptures with Cheronne’s choreography. The first of several performances is September 14th, 2007, at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center in Seattle, WA. sub-Rosa is co-sponsored by the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation, 4Culture and The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, City of Seattle. Last October I received another unusual challenge. I was asked to design a gold bracelet commemorating The Honorable William Jefferson Clinton’s 60th birthday. Beyond the obvious pressure, I faced a jarring three-week deadline to get from concept to production! I donated the bracelet for auction at the former president’s party held inside the Museum of Natural History–a benefit for the William J. Clinton Foundation. Highlights of the experience were meeting the entire Clinton clan, and tickets for the exclusive Rolling Stones concert filmed by Martin Scorcese.

Inspired by my friend Marlene Kahan who has early-onset Parkinson's Disease, I recently created Inspiration, and inspiration2, his-n-hers sterling silver bracelets. Net proceeds from your purchase will be donated to the Parkinsons Unity Walk in her name (www.unitywalk.org). This is a pet project of mine, so I hope you’ll visit the Store page before you leave and help us raise awareness with your Inspiration!
